Low-Level Laser therapy (LLLT) is also known as PhotoBioModulation (PBM) or more popular as cold laser therapy. It is a non-invasive, drug-free and pain-free but extremely effective treatment which stimulates the body’s natural healing processes.

Low Level Laser Therapy is widely used to improve the healing of wounds, soft tissue injuries, pain, tendon problems and fractures. It can also help to neutralise infection and reduce scarring. Being non-invasive LLLT can safely be used on the young, the old and the nervous as well as being particularly suitable for use over painful or sensitive areas.

How does LLLT work?

LLLT has a photochemical effect on the cells, especially on the energy of the cell (ATP). When cells get stressed (due to injury, disease or ageing) the production of ATP decreases, leading to inflammation and cell death. LLLT restores the cell function and consequently, the patient gets better more quickly.

Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing processes enabling optimal repair in acute injuries and re-activating the healing in chronic cases and conditions. In addition to local cellular effects, laser therapy can also be successfully used in the stimulation of acupuncture and trigger points and the management of pain. Laser can ‘block’ the pain messages with appropriate application and increase the release of the ‘feel good’ hormone, endorphin, encouraging relaxation.
